Sleep Apnea Appliances in Northgate
In the past, if a person was suffering from sleep apnea, they really only had two ways to treat it: a CPAP machine or corrective surgery. Many patients have difficulties sleeping with a loud machine that is constantly pumping oxygen into their throat, and absolutely no one likes undergoing surgery! Fortunately, Dr. Sage is able to offer a viable third option. Now, your dentist in Northgate can help apnea patients get the rest they need without a bulky machine or invasive medical procedure just using a small, custom-made oral appliance.
With one of the oral appliances detailed below, we can ensure that you’re able to get deep, restful sleep every night and wake up in the morning feeling fully energized.
Our Sleep Appliances
DYNAFLEX DORSAL
The DynaFlex Dorsal has quickly become one of the most popular choices to help patients dealing with chronic snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnea. Like most appliances, it works by gently shifting the jaw forward in order to prevent the airway from becoming blocked during the night. It has a unique two-piece construction that allows for maximum patient comfort as well as side-to-side jaw movement (this is usually restricted or even impossible with other oral appliances).
It is constructed using a soft, flexible, and durable material that helps it seamlessly fit into the mouth. When designing and making this appliance, CAD/CAM digital software and highly-trained technicians work together to ensure the most accurate fit possible.
SOMNODENT HERBST
The SomnoDent Herbst device consists of a specially-designed acrylic appliance that works in tandem with a pair of small, adjustable metal arms that slightly shift the jaw forward to prevent apnea episodes. It is a very light appliance and enables a patient to retain all of their regular jaw mobility. It’s very easy to create the perfect fit because the arms can be lengthened or shortened in just a few seconds using a small key. In addition to helping with sleep apnea, the Herbst is also a proven method for treating bruxism, or nighttime teeth grinding.
HOW CAN I GET A SLEEP APPLIANCE?
If you believe that you may be suffering from sleep apnea, the only way you can get a custom-made sleep appliance is to first be diagnosed with the condition. There are two main ways you can go about getting this diagnosis.
One, you can visit your family doctor and tell them about your sleeping issues, and then they will refer you to a certified sleep doctor. Or, you can come to see us here at Sage Family Dentistry, and we can refer you to one of our partner sleep doctors.
Once you have been diagnosed, your sleep doctor will decide whether or not you are a good candidate for an oral appliance. If you are, then Sage Family Dentistry can take care of everything else! We’ll simply take an impression of your teeth, and Dr. Sage will use it to design your personalized appliance. He’ll then send this plan to a local lab. After a week or so, you’ll return to our office to pick up your appliance, and you’ll be able to enjoy its benefits that very same night.
