What is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when a patient’s airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep. This lack of oxygen will cause the brain to trigger the patient into waking so that they start breathing normally again. While most people won’t even remember these brief awakenings, they can happen constantly throughout the night, robbing you of the deep, interrupted sleep you need to function in everyday life. If you experience any of the following symptoms on a regular basis, untreated sleep apnea may be the culprit:
- Loud, chronic snoring
- Strong feelings of fatigue or exhaustion in the mornings, even after seemingly getting a full eight hours of rest the night before
- Choking or gasping during sleep
- Frequent trips to the bathroom throughout the night
- Problems with memory and/or concentration
- Regular headaches and cases of sore throat upon waking
How Does Oral Sleep Apnea Appliance Therapy Work?
Oral appliances for sleep apnea are designed to be worn comfortably throughout the night. Your custom-made appliance will gently reposition your lower jaw and/or tongue into a more forward placement. This will open additional space at the back of the throat and reduce the chances of tissue blockage. This means fewer abrupt awakenings in the middle of the night, higher quality sleep, and more energy in the early hours of the day!
