What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a common dental treatment designed to remove infected tissue inside teeth and prevent future infections from occurring. They are usually performed as a result of extensive decay that’s breached the many layers of enamel and dentin, but it can also be done if a tooth is damaged caused by facial trauma. Any dentist can perform a root canal, but depending on the complexity of your case, they may bring in a specialist to perform it instead.

Overall, root canals are performed in order to save teeth. Therefore, being told that you need a root canal is much better when the alternative is an outright extraction. If you have the chance to keep your natural tooth, it’s always better to take advantage of that opportunity.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

Tooth infections are considered to be a dental emergency, so you do not want to put it off if you currently have one. While an X-ray and thorough examination from Dr. Sage is the only way you can confirm that you need a root canal, there are some symptoms that indicate the need for treatment. The most common symptoms include:

  • Severe pain or sensitivity
  • Gum or facial swelling
  • High fever
  • Pimple-like bumps on the gums
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Brown or grey discoloration

What Does Treatment Entail?

After performing necessary X-rays, Dr. Sage will prepare the tooth in question by administering a numbing agent. This will prevent any discomfort during the procedure and should feel no more uncomfortable than receiving a dental filling. Once numb, he’ll create an access hole inside the crown portion of your tooth in order to access the inner portion known as the pulp. While inside, he’ll remove any infected tissue and shape the canal in order to make room for the necessary replacement material. This substance is known as gutta percha and is made from rubber, biocompatible material and designed to seal the inner tooth. By filling it and sealing the access hole with either a filling or crown, we can prevent future infections from occurring and restore full function to your tooth.
